It started with a small blueberry farm and a big dream
In 1993, Gerald and Viki Mixon founded a 7-acre family blueberry farm in Haines City, Florida. It was quite a drastic departure for the Mixons, whose family had owned and operated Haines City Electric for many years. Gerald Mixon had been a part-time citrus grower since the late 1970's, but the family had no experience raising blueberries. They did their homework, started on a small scale and even sought the help of blueberry growers in nearby Gainesville, who graciously obliged. They started by marketing their own berries, expanded to marketing berries from other blueberry growers in the area, and kept growing to become year-round suppliers of blueberries, blackberries and raspberries. Today, the SunnyRidge Farm brand has expanded to include blueberries, blackberries, raspberries and strawberries grown throughout North and South America, offering supplies 365 days a year. It’s a rapidly growing company that has become known for its industry innovation and strong track record for quality and reliability. Perhaps it can be said that we’ve come full circle. For in the beginning, the industry showed us how things were done. Today, we’re showing the industry new ways of doing things. |
